Directory Paid Links - Do they count? - YES
Previously I posted a news release per Google calling all webmasters to report any purchased links so Google can alter their algorithm to ignore and perhaps penalize these links. This article will discuss the potential results of rankings for sites engaging in large paid campaigns with niche directories.
Within the Industrial realm there are a few primary directories which many manufacturers and distributors deem as necessary for generating leads within their company. Included in these directories is Thomasnet.com. Some of these companies spend 100k+ on this advertising campaign. What these companies don’t recognize is that not only do these directories provide leads; but they provide a high amount of relevant links coming into their websites.
With Google's new push for these directories to add no follow tags to the links going into their clients website, I suspect seeing a pretty hefty shift in rankings; in some cases being detrimental to their natural search engine rankings.
Imagine a company having no clue how things work online, but receiving a ton of leads on a daily basis through their website, and suddenly this simply stops due to the decreasing ranking within the search engines. As a SEO specialist it is our duty to prepare our clients of this upcoming event and begin the process of fixing the situation before it is actually broke.
Are you up to the task? How do you propose to solve this problem? :)
